Moving into a new home is an exciting experience, but it can also be a challenge when it comes to decorating for the holidays. What worked in your old house might not necessarily fit the style or layout of your new one. This year, I found myself in that exact situation. My old Christmas decorations just didn’t feel quite right in my new place.

Embrace the Change

Instead of forcing my old decorations to fit, I embraced the opportunity to change things up. I started by assessing the new space. When I moved in, my home had an awkward wall. I also compromised the house having a fireplace. So, I had a local artisan build a beautiful built-in with an electric fireplace and a mantle. I went from a single-level home to a two-story home. Now I have a staircase. I also went from a standard Arizona suburb to an interesting rural/suburb hybrid in North Carolina. My house is set back on my 1.5-acre property leaving me with a long driveway. These features were all begging for some festive touches.

Inside Christmas Decorations

I added lush garland to the mantle and staircase, instantly creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The garland is easy to put up using these awesome 3M Command Cord Bundlers, and the easiest way I have found to attach the garland to stair railings is through these reusable decorative twist ties! Putting all of the garlands up took me under 30 minutes.

Outside Christmas Decorations

For the exterior, I opted for classic elegance. I hung garland around the house trim and added a few wreaths for good measure. I’m considering a cutesy finishing touch: a set of solar-powered Christmas tree lights lining the driveway. These not only add a festive touch but also provide much-needed illumination in our dark neighborhood. I’d like to add more to the outdoors, but cost is prohibitive and it will take a few more years.

Tips for Adapting Your Decorations

  • Consider the scale of your new home. If you’ve moved to a larger house, you may need to invest in some new, larger decorations to fill the space. Conversely, if you’ve downsized, you may need to pare down your collection. A local gifting group may really benefit from your hand-me-downs.
  • Think about the style of your new home. Is it traditional, modern, or something else entirely? Choose decorations that complement the overall aesthetic.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment. This is a great opportunity to try out a new decorating style.
  • Get creative with lighting. Lighting can play a big role in creating a festive atmosphere.

What do you think of my Christmas decorating choices? I’m always open to new ideas and suggestions. What are some of your favorite ways to decorate for the holidays?

Additional Suggestions:

  • If you have a long driveway, you might also consider adding some lighted snowflakes or stars.
  • If you have a porch, you could decorate it with a festive rug, pillows, and throws.
  • Don’t forget about the backyard! You can hang lights in the trees or add a few festive inflatables.
  • If you don’t have the energy to hang lights and live in a safe area, maybe a light projector is the way to go!

I hope this blog post has inspired you to embrace the change and create a festive holiday atmosphere in your new home. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and yours!
