Moving to North Carolina was a dream come true for my husband and me. We found a beautiful home in a peaceful area, far from the hustle and bustle of city life. The only drawback was the distance to the nearest grocery store. To supplement our trips to town and enjoy fresh, delicious vegetables, I decided to start a small vegetable garden.

Gardening has always been a calming and rewarding activity for me. It’s a way to connect with nature, relieve stress, and nurture something from seed to harvest. I knew that a garden would not only provide us with fresh produce but also bring me joy and tranquility as I struggle with depression.

Starting with a Vita Garden and Greenhouse

To kickstart my gardening journey, I assembled a Vita Garden and a greenhouse. I say “assembled” because these were kits—I didn’t build them from scratch. The Vita Garden was the perfect choice due to its spacious raised bed design and enclosed structure, which kept the local wildlife at bay. It was a fabulous starting place. It has allowed me to grow a variety of vegetables without worrying about pests or critters. Bonus, it’s a keyhole garden, and it gave me a convenient place to start composting.

The greenhouse was another excellent addition, providing a controlled environment for starting seeds and extending the growing season. Both the Vita Garden and the greenhouse were instrumental in the early stages of my gardening adventure. I have a few alterations in mind for both, but they will come with time and patience.

Expanding My Gardening Horizons

As I became more involved in gardening, I realized I needed to expand. I spent hours watching YouTube videos and learning from experienced gardeners. One channel that stood out to me was James Prigioni’s. His passion for gardening and the innovative use of raised beds resonated with me.

Inspired by his approach, I decided to stick with raised beds for several reasons. First, they are easier to manage with my chronic pain. The elevated height reduces the need for bending and kneeling, making gardening more comfortable. Second, North Carolina’s clay soil can be challenging to work with, and raised beds provide better soil control and drainage.

Investing in Quality Raised Beds

I purchased a Vego raised bed from James Prigioni’s The Gardening channel, and it has been a perfect addition to my garden. The bed matches my house and fits seamlessly into the space I had available. I love the variety of sizes and add-ons available, allowing me to customize my garden setup. The bug netting, in particular, has been a game-changer, keeping pests out and ensuring my plants thrive.

As funds allow, I plan to add several more of these raised beds to expand my garden further. My affiliate link is available for anyone interested in these raised beds; if you buy through it, I will receive a small portion of the sale.
