Winter’s here, and while the garden sleeps, I’m scheming! This year, my big project is a serious sustainability upgrade: a two-barrel rain collection system for our little community garden.
What started as my own patch of veggies has blossomed into a shared space with my friend and neighbor. We’re all about that homegrown goodness, but between adding raised beds, starting seedlings, and endless watering, it can be a lot of manual labor. So, this winter, we’re aiming to work smarter, not harder.
Why Rain Barrels?
Simply put, rain barrels are awesome! They:
- Save money: Free water from the sky means a lower water bill.
- Conserve water: Reduces strain on municipal water supplies, especially during dry spells.
- Healthier plants: Rainwater is naturally soft and free of chlorine and other chemicals found in tap water.

Our Two-Barrel System
Here’s the plan:
- Collection: We’re diverting the runoff from my greenhouse roof into two rain barrels. More barrels = more water storage for those dry summer days.
- Pump Power: One barrel gets a pump! This allows us to hook it up to our existing drip irrigation system, automating a huge chunk of our watering chores.
- Overflow Control: Both barrels will be linked with an overflow hose, ensuring excess water is directed away from the garden and foundation.
Keeping it Budget-Friendly
While I’m all for eco-friendly upgrades, I’m also keeping an eye on the budget. Here’s how we’re saving:
- DIY Installation: We’re tackling the installation ourselves, saving on labor costs.
- Repurposed Materials: We’re scouring online marketplaces and local gifting groups for used pots and building materials.
- Smart Shopping: For the essentials like additional planters and barrels, I’m comparing prices and looking for deals.
Investment Pieces
Of course, some things are worth spending a bit more on. A quality pump is crucial for the longevity of the system. We’re also investing in:
- Durable hoses and connectors: We need these to withstand the elements and ensure a leak-free system.
- Gutter guards: To keep leaves and debris out of our precious rainwater.
- Barrel stands: Elevating the barrels improves water pressure for the drip system.
I’m excited to share our progress throughout the winter! Stay tuned for updates on our rain barrel adventure, including tips, tricks, and maybe even a few DIY fails along the way. Happy gardening (or in this case, pre-gardening)!
